The green movement is starting to make an impact on our police departments. The Dallas Police Department is considering switching from standard road flares to battery-powered LED road flares. The LED lights are being considered in an effort to reduce air pollution as road flare.

I’m torn a bit about this transition. There is some concern that retrieving reusable flares like these could put officers in danger of passing vehicles that don’t take caution and slow down. That is a legitimate concern but I see that issue being worked out through revisions to police standards for using the flares in a police stop or vehicle accident situation. What I would want to know is what are the manufacturing effects of producing a LED flare versus a standard flare. Does it take more or less energy to create either?
