Who Gives a Lumen About Watts Anyway?
We hear a lot about the lumens of a flashlight or the wattage of a lightbulb but do any of us really understand what this means? When we see this information on product packaging does it register any sort of “oh good” or that’s too low? For most of us, we glaze over as this information is passed onto us. Well, maybe if you knew more about what this means, you may pay closer attention. It actually can be very helpful.
A Watt / Wattage: This refers to a unit of electrical power. The number indicates the rate at which a light bulb, lamp, etc consumes energy
Lumens: This is a measure of the quantity of light emitted by a light source, like a bulb.
The lumen is really the best way to measure light output for any light source. It is a more accurate representation of what type of light quality you will get than the watts measurement. For instance, LED Lenser flashlights that use Luxeon I LEDs, referred to as 1 watt LEDs, are actually brighter lights, producing a higher lumen, than other brands that use 3 watt LEDs.
So, take care to compare the lumen measure between flashlights before you make your purchase. If you are looking for the brightest quality light, choose an LED flashlight with a high lumens measure.
